Body Beast: Meet Sagi Kalev

Body Beast with Sagi KalevMeet Your Body Beast Trainer

I’m in my home stretch of Body Beast. So far, I’m loving the program. Pretty much everyone I know who has tried it feels the same way. I was somewhat adverse to the idea of doing a program just to put on muscle mass, but I have to say that Body Beast has changed my mind. It uses sound principles on weight training, nutrition, and dietary supplements. I’m a convert, now. More accurately, I respect the education that Body Beast has provided me on these areas.

My trainer for the last three months has been Sagi Kalev. Before Body Beast was released in June 2012, I had no idea who he was. I’m not a follower of the body building community, so his name was unfamiliar to me. Even if you don’t know who Sagi is, if you subscribe to muscle and fitness magazines, you’re probably familiar with his face and physique. He has appeared on countless covers of various body building related magazines. He is also the trainer for professional body builders, and operates a gym in Dallas, TX. How he wound up in Dallas from Israel, I have no idea.

When I got a chance to talk to Sagi, he discussed how Beachbody approached him to create a muscle building program that can be done from home. In case you didn’t know, Beachbody’s market niche are people who prefer to work out at home instead of the gym. There were a lot of well known bodybuilders who could’ve done a decent job with a home program, but Beachbody wanted to work with Sagi because he had a reputation for clean training (no drugs), and being the guy that top bodybuilders turn to when they want results.

Long story short, it took two years of development time to get Body Beast on the market. There was a lot of testing that needed to be done to ensure that the program would work as advertised using only equipment that would not be available at the gym. Beachbody also had to develop a new line of supplements to go with the program.

Now that the program is out, I can’t imagine anyone else who is more right to be the featured trainer than Sagi Kalev. Personality is one of those things that is hard to explain or quantify, but his personality is just perfect for the program. He has the right combination of low key humor, intensity, and in-your-face motivation. He is the reason why I am willing to haul myself out of bed every day at 5:45 a.m. to work out. I know that it will be fun and productive because Sagi is in the house.

Check Out This Video Featuring Sagi Kalev

I think the video gives you some idea of what it’s like to work out with Sagi. He’s not shy about telling folks what to do and what not to do. His coaching is excellent overall. When you do the Body Beast workouts, Sagi’s instructions are precise and detailed. A complete novice can follow them. Most importantly, he’s not a gym rat jackass. He prods you to push yourself, but remembers that everyone has to start at the beginning, and gives motivational words to help you along.

Ten pounds of muscle mass in 90 days. Are you ready for the challenge?

Body Beast Results: Long Term Results

Body Beast Results: What Results Can You Expect Long Term?

Body Beast long term resultsI’ve written  here and here about some Body Beast results that real dudes have achieved from doing the workout program for 90 days. In response to my posts, some people have emailed me to say that they weren’t too impressed with the results. They say that they didn’t see too much difference. They expected more.

Unfortunately, we live in an instant gratification world. We forget that great gains can only be achieved with consistent long term training. Hollywood has has also screwed up our expectations from the stories it produces of actors who managed to go from skinny to hulkish in two months. Let’s get real people, you will not be able to gain 30 pounds of muscle in two months regardless of how much time you spend at the gym. This is absolute fantasy. Anyone who believes this crap should go back to reading comic books.

This is my response to the naysayers who think that Body Beast can’t get the job done. What is so disappointing about 10-17 pounds of mass gain in 90 days? We’re talking muscle mass, here, not fat. It’s obvious that the guys doing the program got bigger and more cut at the same time, so the mass they gained from Body Beast is pure muscle. While it’s possible to gain more mass in the same amount of time, most of that will not be muscle. Most of it will be water retention and fat.

Despite popular misconceptions which are fueled by irresponsible media, the human body can only produce a certain amount of muscle mass in a given time.  Without the use of growth hormones, the human body can create a maximum of .5-.75 pound of muscle tissue each week of hard training. This is under optimal conditions where the person is eating the right kinds of foods to maximize muscle growth. Also, a newbie will make greater gains than someone who has been weight training for a long time. Anything above .5-.75 pound per week is extremely difficult to come by unless you’re on steroids. For women, it’s a lot less. Therefore, the fact that a lot of the guys in the Body Beast test group were able to achieve 10-17 pounds of muscle mass gain in twelve weeks is right in line with what is physically possible. They are very close to maximizing their potential.

Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the guys in the test group were “hardgainers,” meaning they had trouble putting real mass on with any workout program. Some have been trying for years, and Body Beast was the first program that produced real results. It’s not just about weight gain, the guys were able to grow real inches in the arms, chest, and legs. I count myself among the category of hardgainers. I’ve been working out consistently for over two years, and have never developed muscle mass as quickly as I have with Body Beast. I added over 1.5 inches to each leg alone.

Body Beast Long Term Results Video

I’m posting this video to show what can be achieved with Body Beast long term. All the guys in the video have been doing Body Beast for at least a year. They are cast members who appear in the different Body Beast workouts in the program. They have been training with Sagi Kalev, the Body Beast trainer for a long time, and participated in the development of the Body Beast workout program.

I don’t know where they started off, but it’s clear that the program works for them and has produced massive results. That’s what can happen if you are consistent and persistent over the long term. You will get the physique you want. While I’m not looking to get as big like these dudes, because that’s not a fitness goal of mine, I have no doubt that if I followed the Body Beast workout program for a year or more, including the nutrition plan and the supplements, I could get the same results.

If you want additional evidence that Body Beast works, just look at the photo of Sagi Kalev. He’s been body building for many years, and he’s also responsible for training many professional body buildings. If you want results, he’s the go-to guy to help you achieve them.

Check the video below and see what Body Beast can do for you if you’re looking for long term results.

The Body Beast Supplements

Body Beast SupplementsThe Body Beast Supplements

I used to be the guy who didn’t believe in supplements. I thought they were overpriced crap that promised too much but delivered too little. I also used to be the guy that never got great results. Coincidence? Now, I’m a different guy. In just 31 days of Body Beast, I managed to gain 11 pounds of mass, 1/2 inch on each arm, 1 1/2 inches on each leg, and 2 inches on my chest. My wife has noticed that my entire body has gotten thicker. In the past, it would’ve taken me half a year to get the same results. All I’m doing is following the eating plan, using the supplements, and of course, hitting the Body Beast workouts hard.

When I started Body Beast, I made a decision to go “all in,” including using ALL the supplements. I’m glad I did, because I would not have gotten the same results if I had not.  The bottom line is that the right supplements can make all the difference. I can say with confidence now that I have experienced it that the Body Beast supplements will help your muscles grow faster and recover more quickly from the Body Beast workouts. As Sagi says, the supplements are a huge component of the program. Would you buy a car without doors? Same thing if you ditch the supplements. You won’t get the full benefits of doing Body Beast. If you’re going to do these ass kicking workouts, might as well get more growth from them.

Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake

This shake is the foundation of the Body Beast nutrition plan. Each serving contains 18 grams of whey protein concentrate and whey isolate, and 9 grams of malodextrin and dextrose. Dextrose allows the whey protein to quickly reach your muscle cells while the malodextrin slows the absorption of the shake’s other ingredients. The combination is an ideal way to help replenish your glycogen levels without causing your levels to spike.

The muscle-building amino acids in Hardcore Base Shake is exactly what you need to maximize growth. Its exclusive blend of whey isolates and whey concentrate gives you 18 grams of premium protein to help boost your results, without dangerous chemicals. It also contains digestive enzymes to help enhance protein utilization and reduce gas and bloating. This is something other lesser whey protein powders don’t offer. And, it is flavor neutral so you can make your shake just the way you want it. No artificial colors or flavors in your protein. Finally, somebody got it right! One of the things that I never liked about other whey protein powders I have tried is the nasty aftertaste. Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake solves this problem for me. If you mix it on its own, it tastes just like milk (just thicker).

The Hardcore Base Shake can be used on its own post-workout, or can be taken with the Beachbody Fuel Shot for quick energy as a pre- or post-workout drink, or can be blended with other ingredients to create a calorie-packed recipe.

Beachbody M.A.X. Muscle Acceleration Xtreme Creatine

Not to be confused with harmful anabolic steroids, creatine is a substance your liver, kidneys, and pancreas create. During exercise, when your body runs out of the fuel, it relies on alternative, anabolic pathways that are built with the help of creatine. Once your natural supply runs out, your muscles become fatigued.

The Beachbody M.A.X. Creatine supplement was designed to help you keep those pathways flowing so your muscles fatigue less quickly when used within 30 minutes of a workout. It contains pure creatine monohydrate and no added fillers, preservatives, or other risky or untested ingredients. Creatine monohydrate is one of bodybuilding’s most scientifically effective ingredients.

Like other Body Beast supplements, M.A.X. Creatine does not have any artificial colors or flavors, so you can mix it with your favorite shake to boost its effectiveness. It is best taken with a shake made with Beachbody Fuel Shot and Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake.

Download the nutritional information for Beachbody M.A.X. Creatine here.

Beachbody Fuel Shot

What the Hardcore Base Shake does for your protein levels, the Fuel Shot does for your blood sugar. When you work out, your body burns through its easily-accessible blood sugar and then turns to its glycogen reserves. Glycogen allows the muscles to work in short, powerful bursts. It is critical to keep these two tanks full so you don’t suffer from OGG (out of gas) in the middle of your workout. Beachbody Fuel Shot will help drive nutrients into muscle fiber for greater strength during workouts and replenish your glycogen stores. In addition, the Beachbody Fuel Shot is loaded with electrolytes to help you stay hydrated when you’re sweating bullets, so you can use it on its own during a workout. It is recommended that you drink Beachbody Fuel Shot with Beachbody Hardcore Base Shake to enhance their effectiveness. Use daily for accelerated muscle endurance, size, and strength.

Beachbody Super Suma

For centuries, the indigenous people of the Amazon region have used Brazilian ginseng or suma root as a general cure-all, as well as a tonic for strength, energy, and sexual prowess. In the 1970′s, it became known in sports training circles and was nicknamed “the Russian Secret” when it was discovered that Russian Olympic athletes were using it to enhance their endurance and build muscle.

For Body Beast, it is the secret ingredient to build lean, hard mass. Super Suma is an ideal supplement as it supports explosive gains in size and strength. It is a proprietary plant-based enzyme that will will help increase your body’s own testosterone production to help jack up muscle strength, size, and endurance. Use daily to help unleash your body’s own testosterone production. Beachbody Super Suma is created from the powerful suma root, an herb indigenous to South America, so it is safe to use.

How I Use the Body Beast Supplements

Some people have complex stacking cycles for the supplements and only take them at certain times during the day. I like to keep things simple. Right after my morning workout, I put all of the Body Beast Supplements into the blender and mix myself a super potent shake. It’s my reward for hitting it hard, because on some mornings, I am so wasted from the workouts that I can barely press the blend buttons :) Taking the supplements immediately after a workout is also the best way to ensure that your muscles are getting the nutrients they need, when the need it the most (during the repair process).

Body Beast Muscle Building system vs. the GymWhy Body Beast Instead of the Gym?

[UPDATE: Very soon, you won't have to worry about deciding between Body Beast vs. the gym, because Body Beast is coming to the iPhone. You will be able to take your Body Beast workouts with you to the gym and use the heavy iron there. Nice. It will be a free download to existing Body Beast customers. Read more on this post.]

Still skeptical that an at-home bodybuilding program can deliver massive results? Try it and see for yourself. All of Beachbody’s products come with a money back guarantee. Does your gym have that? Didn’t think so. Remember that a gym is just a place to work out. It’s not a system. Body Beast is a comprehensive muscle building system that is designed to produce muscle growth. No more trial and error. Just follow the program and watch your results materialize. So, save some cash and get BIG. Fire your gym!

Let’s face it. If you’re a gym rat who spends two hours or more at the gym each time and you’re NOT getting the results you’re looking for, Body Beast is for you. You will not get BIG gains by training like a hamster and doing exactly what everyone else is doing.  That is, going from one weight station to another. Most of your time is spent waiting for the station to become free, or wiping down equipment, anyway. I know the life of a gym rat because I used to be one. Many years ago. I worked out consistently, but never got results past a certain point.  If you want your results to be different, you have to do something different. Massive gains only come about from massive changes. That’s how it works.  Body Beast is the game changer you’ve been looking for.

Work out hard, but also work out smart. Working out hard regularly, but not getting the results at the gym? Try Body Beast. The workouts, along with its special nutrition and supplement plan, will make your muscles explode. Did I mention that the program comes with a guarantee? Step away from the gym and go for real results. The bottom line is that if your program has stopped working for you, it’s time to change your program.

  • You’ll get huge at a fraction of the cost of a gym membership. Body Beast is designed so that you can repeat the program to get even better results. • You’re not just working your muscles, you’re get an in-depth bodybuilding education that you can use long after you’ve completed the program. Does your gym offer you a systematic plan for achieving your muscle building goals? Have you ever gotten advice from any of the gym rats that actually worked?
  • The Body Beast Eating Plan shows you healthy, delicious ways to eat that will help you build muscle mass fast—and maintain that muscle for the long haul. Does your gym show you how to eat right to get big and stay big? Has anyone ever discussed nutrition with you?

Ten pounds of muscle mass in 90 days. Are you ready for the challenge?

Body Beast Workouts

Introduction to the Body Beast Workouts

Body Beast workoutsFor those who are in a hurry to get huge, every Body Beast kit comes with twelve muscle blasting workouts. I’ve been doing Body Beast for the last four weeks, and I can say without hesitation that Body Beast features the best weight training DVD workouts that Beachbody, or anyone, has ever produced. These workouts are the last word in exercises designed to build mass (until Sagi Kalev can dream up more ways to induce muscle failure). If you can’t gain mass following the Body Beast program, you’re probably doing it wrong.

The Body Beast workouts are divided into three series that corresponds with the phases of the program. In the Build Phase, you will be learning the fundamentals of body building. Sagi will instruct you how to lift using proper form and technique so your workouts are safe and effective. The Bulk Phase is where most of the magic happens. Each major muscle group gets its own workout so that you will pack on muscle mass at ridiculous rates. The Beast Phase is when you will be cutting and sculpting the new muscles you have developed in the first two phases to get that shredded look. In only 90 days, your body will be transformed.

The Tempo Bonus workouts are yours if you purchase a Body Beast Huge Stack or Beast Stack kit. The Lucky 7 Bonus workout are available exclusively through the Team Beachbody coaching network. You’ll receive this DVD as a free gift if you purchase Body Beast from my blog.

This is only a quick introduction to the workouts to give you an idea of the comprehensive approach Body Beast has taken. I will be writing an in-depth review of each workout in the future.

The Body Beast Build Series Workouts

Build: Chest/Tris. This workout focuses on the muscles of your chest and triceps to create strength and definition in your upper torso and arms.

Build: Back/Bis. You want the V taper that is the hallmark of a great physique? This workout will put you in the right direction. You’ll also do a lot of curling to pump up the glamour muscles in your arms.

Build: Legs. Chicken legs belong on a fast-food menus, not your body. Say goodbye to them forever because this workout will help you build powerful quads, hamstrings, calves, and gluts. In my opinion, this is the toughest workout in the Body Beast program.

Build: Shoulders. Shoulders are your body’s clothes hangers. Strong, defined shoulders are what gives men the manly look. This is your go-to workout to pump up your shoulders.

The Body Beast Bulk Series Workouts

Bulk: Chest. It’s all about getting huge pecs. You want them? This is the workout to develop that massive torso. You’ll hit your chest muscles from various angles with Super sets, Combo sets, and more. The way to get the biggest results is the create muscle fatigue.

Bulk: Back. You want to have a massive upper body, but it shouldn’t be all chest; otherwise, you’ll wind up looking like a hunched over monkey. That’s why you need this workout to balance out your chest. It will strengthen and add mass to your back. You’ll look good coming or going.

Bulk: Shoulders. Part of the V taper look is having strong and defined shoulders. This workout will take your shoulders to the next level, from strong and defined to powerful and huge.

Bulk: Arms. Huge biceps and triceps will help you look great in a tank top. This is the workout that will help get you there.

Bulk: Legs. The sets in this workout will turn your former chicken legs into turkey drumsticks. Want to get the feeling of standing on top of two massive tree trunks? This workout will do it.

The Body Beast Beast Series Workouts

Beast: Abs. A six-pack is great, but having a powerful core is better. A strong core helps you lift heavy weights safely and improve your posture so you can stand straighter and taller.

Beast: Cardio. When you’re ready to show off those muscles you’ve built, it’s time to shed the fat that’s lying on top of them. This intense cardio workout will have your fat cells crying for mercy.

Beast: Total Body. When your entire body craves the burn, or you’ve missed a workout day or two, this is the workout to get the job done.

Bonus Body Beast Workouts

Tempo Chest/Tris. The Tempo workouts will have you executing lifts in fixed slow-mo counts. In this workout, you’ll practically feel your tris and chest muscles grow from the isometric moves.

Tempo Back/Bis. More grueling than the Build Back/Bis workout, you can substitute this workout for days when you want to punish/reward yourself. Your back will never know what hit it.

Lucky 7.  This workout is comprised of seven exercises and seven pyramids to give you that full body burn you want in order to melt fat and chisel your physique. Or, you can make up for a day you missed.

Check out this video of some of the Body Beast workouts.

Ten pounds of muscle mass in 90 days. Are you ready for the challenge?

Equipment You Will Need to Do Body Beast

Body Beast recommended equipmentBody Beast Recommended Equipment

You probably already know that Body Beast is a muscle building program designed to be done at home. This would not mean much if Body Beast requires that your home be outfitted like a global gym, does it? Keep reading to find out exactly what equipment you will need to complete the program and get the results you want. I will also talk about the modifications to the program if you don’t have a lot of cash for buying equipment (because you would rather save your dough to buy the recommended supplements), or you don’t have a lot of space. Keep in mind, too, that Body Beast for the iPhone is in the works, so if you want to do your Body Beast workouts at a gym, that could be part of your future. I hear it will be a free download for Body Beast customers.

I am currently on week 4 of Body Beast, so my recommendations are not based upon conjecture or wishful thinking. This is my personal experience that I am sharing with you. My goal is to make your investment of time and money into the program and its supplements as productive as possible.

Body Beast Equipment for Maximum Results

Adjustable weight dumbbellsAdjustable Weight Dumbbells. This piece of gear is a “must” as far as I’m concerned. Throughout the Body Beast workouts, you will be going up and down in weights A LOT. In one set, you could be lifting 25 pounds, in another, 50 pounds, and so on. It will go by very fast, so you must have a set of adjustable dumbbells that can keep up with the pace of the workout.  I can tell you that even though I am using an adjustable dumbbell set, I still barely have enough time to dial in my weights to keep up with Sagi Kalev and the Body Beast crew. Sometimes there are only 15-30 seconds between sets, so there is no time to be fooling around with plates, handles, and clips. Therefore, I don’t think the dumbbells handles where you can switch out plates will work because it will take you too long to set up the plates for both dumbbells, unless you pause the workout for an extended period. This will be a big mistake because Body Beast’s training system requires that you lift using a certain tempo and pace for maximum results, and the pacing is NOT leisurely (I will write full reviews of each workout in the future).

If you’re lucky enough to have a complete set of dumbbells from 10-100 pounds, then you will get excellent results. Having said that, I also recommend getting smaller dumbbells in the 5-15 pounds range for the warmups and shoulder exercises. Most adjustable weight dumbbells don’t go below 15 pounds, so you need something smaller to fill that gap. I have a set of 8-10-12-15 dumbbells for this purpose. Unless you have freakishly powerful shoulders, you will probably not want to do some of the deltoid exercises with just 15 pound weights. Trust me on this.

I don’t have any recommendations for any particular brand of adjustable weight dumbbells because I haven’t tried all of them to know which one is the best.  Just for the record, I am using the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells because my brother-in-law was kind enough to pass them on to me. I recognize that adjustable weight dumbbells can be a hefty investment, but you can use them for almost every Beachbody workout program, so they’ll pay off in the end.

EZ Curl barEZ Curl bar. This is a featured piece of gear for many of the exercises in all of the Body Beast workouts. The one you get from Beachbody works great, and that’s what I’m using myself. The clips that come with them are hard to use at first, but once you break them in, they will go on and come off fairly easily. I think the plates that Beachbody sells are a bit lame (probably shouldn’t be saying this as a Team Beachbody coach, but I gotta keep it real). They are more bulky than necessary because they are not solid metal. They are the filled plastic kind. This would work fine if you are trying to avoid noise and clatter when you work out, but I recommend that you get metal weights from your local sports store so you can pile on a lot of plates at once without worrying about running out of handle space. Make sure you buy the ones with the “standard” holes which are about 1” instead of the 2” “Olympic” plates.

Chin-Up Bar.  Body Beast has chin-up and pullup exercises to work your back muscles, so a chin-up bar is also a must. I’m still using the P90X Chin-up Bar that I purchased more than two years ago. It’s still going strong despite being used and abused regularly.

Chin-Up MaxChin-Up Max. If you want to get all the pullup and chin-up reps in, but don’t yet have the necessary upper body strength, this little piece of gear is fantastic. I wrote about it here. I have one at home because my wife likes to use it for her workouts, but I have to admit that I started using it for the Body Beast workouts because some of the pullup isometric moves are brutal. I consider pullups or chin-ups to be one of my strengths, and have never had any problems with them until Body Beast came along.

Powerblock workbenchAdjustable Workbench.  I wanted to get maximum results from Body Beast, so I purchased one of these. It has been a good investment so far. Every workout will use the workbench at one point or another. Make sure you get one that has a back support that can be adjusted all the way up (90 degrees) and down (completely flat). When you’re lifting heavy, you need as much support as possible.

Body Beast Equipment for Limited Budget

In each of the workouts, one of the guys will demonstrate how to do each move if you have limited equipment. For the most part, the modifications are sound and you won’t lose much efficacy with them. They will get the job done for you.

Stability BallThe adjustable workbench can be switched out for a stability ball. This will actually make the exercise harder, because you will have to spend a lot of energy trying to balance yourself and to keep your core straight on a stability ball. I learned this from having completed P90X2. Your core will definitely become stronger. But, you will likely have to lighten your weights to be able to use this modification. Lighter weights might inhibit your muscle growth. Notice that I said muscle growth, and not strength, because it’s likely that you will become just as strong using lighter weights on a stability ball as you would using heavier weights on a stable surface. The thing is, you got Body Beast because you wanted to get huge. I tend to think a stability ball will not produce the results you’re looking for, although I could be wrong on this. The bottom line is that the workbench is not absolutely necessary.

The EZ Curl bar can be eliminated if you just want to stick to dumbbells. The demonstrators will show you how to do each exercise using just dumbbells instead of the EZ Bar. You’ll probably get the same results if you don’t mind slightly tweaking the exercises.

The Chin-up bar can be switched out for high quality resistance bands.  I really don’t recommend doing this because the resistance bands can never match your body weight, but the modifications are included in the program if you need it. The Chin-Up bar is such a good deal that the only reason why you wouldn’t want to get one is because you don’t have a doorway to mount it.

That’s it. Believe it or not, you can get amazing Body Beast results just using these pieces of equipment. No need for a gym. Does Body Beast work? I can tell you from my experience that I have gained almost an inch on each arm and I’m only in week 4 of the program, so yeah, it’s been working for me. I will post more results in the future.

We’ve been sold on the idea that we need the global gyms with their fancy equipment to get great results, but this is a load of crap. If anything, these gyms have taken us away from what it means to be functional fit due to their reliance on machines. Body Beast will return you to the basics.

Beast up baby!
