You don’t need a stinking gym membership to get great results.

Or fancy equipment, or a personal trainer. In fact, everything you need can be found at your local sporting goods store. During my fitness dark years, I lamented the fact that I didn’t have access to a gym. This was my excuse for getting soft, my way way of rationalizing my poor state of health. Once in a while I would hop on my doorway pullup bar or do a couple sets of pushups, but this was it by way of weight training.  When I saw people who were really healthy and fit, I’d always assumed that they were that way because they were able to go to the gym all the time, owned the best fitness equipment to work out with, or hired an expensive personal trainer to motivate them.  Since I had none of those things, there was no way I can achieve the same fitness level as these folks.

I was wrong. I know now that you need none of those things to achieve total fitness. At 43 years old, I have a better physique than when I was 18.  I have not stepped into a gym for over ten years. I don’t have any fancy workout machines at home. And no personal trainer is at my beck and call. Except when I run, I work out at home. What’s in my home gym? A pullup bar, a set of dumbbells I bought from Sports Authority, pushup stands, a DVD player, and of course my [intlink id=”164″ type=”page”]P90X[/intlink], [intlink id=”167″ type=”page”]P90X2[/intlink], and [intlink id=”158″ type=”page”]Insanity[/intlink] programs. All the action happens in my living room in front of my TV.

This is something the multi-billion dollar gym businesses with their spendy fees don’t want you to know. You don’t need them to get great results. Along with thousands of other people, I am living proof of that. Trust me—I’m no freak of nature. All I did was follow the P90X program. Using just my bodyweight and some basic equipment, I regained a high level of strength and fitness. I’m not knocking gyms, because they do have their place, I’m just saying that you shouldn’t use a lack of a gym membership as an excuse for not being physically active. The bottom line for me is convenience. I have three small kids to raise so hanging out at the gym is out of the question. I’d rather work out whenever and wherever I want. In the same amount of the time that it takes a person to drive to a gym, change into workout clothes, and begin the first set, I would’ve been done with my entire workout. That leaves me more time to live the rest of my life. That little bit of extra time with the family is a big deal to me. Plus, I don’t need to deal with gym rats, poseurs, form Nazis, wiping down sweaty equipment, waiting in line for my turn, inconvenient hours, expensive dues that keep going UP UP UP, traffic, parking, and wasting gas. Some people want to pay for these privileges. I prefer not to. You have 1440 minutes in a day. You can devote just 60 of those minutes to your health and fitness, or you can spend the same time driving to and from a place so you can workout.

The reality is that a gym membership doesn’t guarantee results. Unless you sign on with a personal trainer who will create a personalized program, which entails additional fees, you’re likely to get lost in the crowd without a plan, system, or strategy. The results won’t materialize and you lose motivation.

Or, you can work out in the comfort of your own home to a program that is designed from the ground up for total fitness–cardio, strength, and flexibility training. The works. Let’s talk dollars and sense. For half the price of a typical gym membership initiation fee, you get a fitness program that you can use forever. There’s no monthly renewal fees, either. Plus, you can share it with your entire family. For almost two years, my wife and I worked out together to the same program because it has scalable intensity levels. If my kids see me doing pullups and they want to jump in to try, no one is going to demand to see their membership pass.

Finally, I never have to worry about missing a workout when I travel because I can take my gym with me everywhere I go.
